Bigbelly solar helps recycling in Uppsala and emission targets

Uppsala has chosen Big Belly Solar - the eco-smart waste & recycling system, to meet the city's environmental goals of recycling and reduced transportation in the urban environment.

Uppsala has chosen both triple stations (two compactors-BB4 & one Smartbelly) to be able to separate plastic and combustible as well as glass in a public environment. Furthermore, the system has been supplemented with single compactors (BB4) to cover up larger area.

The experience of choosing this new collection system is surprisingly positive. The download rate of emptying has decreased from 7 times per week per vessel to 1.4 times per week per vessel! Through real-time compression and information via software support CLEAN , the operation can be optimised.

Pär Blom, Operations Manager Teknik & Gata, sees clear benefits of BigBelly Solar and as a bonus, the need for trash picking around bins has decreased by 20-30%. Uppsala has with the system streamlined its retrieval and reduced the risk of overfill, which gives a cleaner cityscape.

The project is being tested with the support of Uppsala Miljöprotokoll, an initiative that connects the municipality's activities with industry and associations to find common solutions to a sustainable future.
