Västerås invests in smart collection for the future!

Littering costs the city of Västerås millions of kronor each year. One of the most vulnerable places is Lögastrand. Now the municipality has bought bins for half a million kronor to address the problem. "They attract attention," says Ulf Palm, municipal strategist at the Technical Office.

That people don't pick up their trash is not a new problem. But despite various efforts, the city of Västerås is unable to overcome the problem.
One of the most vulnerable places is Lögastrand, which is filled with people on sunny summer days.
"It's often very dirty and rubbish here. That's why I've decided to come here," says Linn Andersson, who visited the beach for the first time in a long time last Thursday.
Now the municipality is taking a new approach to littering. Ten purpose-built garbage cans have been set up on Lögastrand.
The bins can hold eight ordinary garbage cans when the rubbish is compressed. They also send a message when they need to be emptied. The barrels are powered by solar cells.
- Then they're pretty, too. And built so neither rats nor birds can access the debris," says Ulf Palm, municipal strategist at Tekniska kontor.
The municipality has bought the trash cans to test them during the summer. If they work as they should, more will probably be bought and set in another rubbish place, namely Vasaparken.
