Copenhagen Airport implements Bigbelly

Bigbellys smart waste & recycling takes off at airports around the world! From Singapore to Copenhagen to NYC distributes Bigbelly lower operating costs, achieve sustainability goals and create a clean, safe and comfortable passenger experience.

Airports from Singapore to Copenhagen to NYC

Bigbelly creates beautiful, state-of-the-art transport flows without visible waste, minimizing visitors' interaction with daily maintenance routines. By following the sustainability principles of Bigbellys ecosystems reduce negative environmental impacts for hardware and software and integrate sustainable practices into day-to-day operations.

Total operating costs are on average 4 times lower than traditional waste systems and reduce garbage collection by up to 10 times. Save on materials and reduce trash footprint, while maintaining passenger convenience.

Bigbelly at Copenhagen Airport

Before the pilot project, there were a number of different waste management problems, such as:

  • Same design for all waste containers regardless of type of waste
  • Overcrowded waste containers daily • Five emptyings daily for each waste container
  • Large amounts of plastic in the waste
  • No sorting of waste in passenger compartments
  • Existing waste containers partially overcrowded
  • Bottles and cans were sent away as normal waste
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) made the decision to implement Bigbelly system following a pilot project in January 2020.
Fewer bins
60%
Reduction of collections
90%

With the desire to first and foremost find a solution to sort waste, and specifically to sort plastic bottles and reduce the number of daily emptying operations, CPH managed to optimise both waste collection and source management - with a specific focus on bottle collection. At the same time, the potential to use fewer labour resources was realised.

As a result of Covid-19, Copenhagen Airport experienced more than 90% loss of customer base. The Bigbelly project was adjusted to expected losses until 2022, but even with that in mind, the decision to implement the Bigbelly solution proved to be a good option for waste management at CPH.

In the period after implementation and before Covid-19, the Bigbelly system sorted about 20,000 litres of bottles and cans and brought in revenue of about 7,000 DKK daily, as well as reducing the number of waste collections by more than 90%. This led to cleaner seating areas, and a reduction of about 60% in the number of waste bins. We believe that the visibility of the Bigbelly solution is the main reason why it is now easier for passengers to use the bins correctly.
