Malmö gets new modern bins from Bigbelly

Bigbelly is coming to central Malmö! The rubbish that visitors throw in the bins will be compressed using solar energy and the bin itself will report when it's time for emptying. The bins are also completely sealed which means fewer pests and less garbage in the canal.

Central Malmö gets smart, solar-powered bins which need emptying less often!

Malmö has already invested in about twenty smart bins from Bigbelly which have been deployed in the city, cutting the number of collections and increasing capacity. The reduced need for transport helps lower environmental impact and increase operational productivity.

In the long term, we can reduce the number of rubbish bins in the public areas of our city, but still handle the same amount of rubbish. We'll get a signal in an app when it's time to empty the bins. We can decide for ourselves when the signal should be sent through the app depending on how full the bin should be before emptying. In this way, we can reduce the number of times it needs emptying.

says Johan Björklund, section head within land management and responsible for sanitation work.
