The new bins that were placed yesterday on Stora torget in Västervik fulfil more than just one function. In addition to compressing garbage, the solar-powered barrels can count visitors in the center.
Now they will be on trial in Västervik for a month.
"It's an environmentally friendly thin, Bigbelly , powered by solar cells. The garbage is compressed and information is sent to us when it is time to empty, says Kent Elander, Operations Manager Park/Fritid at Västervik Miljö & Eneri AB.
They give us the opportunity to know how many people are visiting us. In this way, we can find out how many people are moving around and how many our events attract," says Annika Boman.
The barrel looks for Wifi signals and thus knows how many, with devices with wifi connection, that are nearby. The method is approved by the Swedish Data Protection Authority.
