Malmö city's talking bins became world famous this summer for their sensuality
But what not many people know is that in May this year, the City of Malmö decided to relocate 18 smart bins from Bigbelly to new locations in Malmö. The locations that were chosen based on litter intensity and water proximity were Sundspromenaden, Södertull and Dragörkajen. A total of 29 traditional bins were removed during the deployment.
In two of the 18 bins, the city also used the built-in sound modules to play famous male and female voices in its campaign. Snack talk to shed light on - and raise awareness of - the littering issue.

- could work more efficiently by using an app to see which bins needed emptying. In the period May to September, the number of inspections/emptying of bins decreased from 4,437 to 949 compared to the same period last year. A decrease of 78.6%
- these 18 smart bins collected a whopping 386,784 litres of rubbish compared to 97,995 litres at their previous locations in the same period last year.
- increased the collection capacity at the sites concerned despite the fact that the number of bins was lower than before the deployment. This was achieved by compacting the waste in the bins.
- created cleaner places by keeping debris in the barrel and out of the reach of pests and unauthorised persons.
- can now ensure, via system support, that minimally unnecessary emptying of half-full bins is carried out.
