In recent years, the number of fires in e-bike batteries has increased, often linked to unsafe charging and lack of fire protection. One of the reasons for the increase is that more electric vehicles are in circulation. E-bike batteries can easily overheat, increasing the risk of thermal runaway and fire.

Why do lithium-ion batteries catch fire?


Lithium-ion batteries, which are used in most electric vehicles, can under certain circumstances spontaneously combust during charging or in the event of an accident. Thermal runaway and fire protection

Fires in lithium-ion (abbreviated Li-Ion) batteries can occur for several reasons. One of the most common is thermal runaway, where an overheated battery cell triggers a chain reaction that can quickly escalate into a fire. Overcharging or defective batteries are another risk factor, as they can cause a short circuit and lead to the battery catching fire. In addition, mechanical damage, for example from blows or falls, can damage battery cells and trigger a fire - sometimes days after the damage has occurred.

Once a lithium-ion battery catches fire, it develops rapidly and emits extremely high heat and toxic gases, making it difficult to extinguish. In enclosed spaces, these gases can accumulate and increase the risk of explosion. Extinguishing a battery fire with water is also problematic, as water can initially exacerbate the fire and requires large quantities to cool the battery sufficiently.
