First step towards urban waste separation
Öland is now ready for the summer with the city's first smart sorting system.
"An Öland without litter" is the title of Borgholm Municipality's new campaign, and as part of this initiative, they have implemented Bigbelly - a platform for smarter litter management. The bins are connected to the network and notify the responsible service staff when emptying should take place, thus minimising unnecessary collections.
It is great to see that the municipality is shedding light on the litter issue through its campaign which includes several good initiatives such as:
- distribution of gloves and garbage bags
- the city's street fountains are decorated with messages
- distribution of portable ashtrays
- Holiday kids dressed in stylish vests with campaign message during summer
- introduction of a solar-powered, connected recycling station in the square
- call for participation in litter picking days
Bigbelly are today unique with their modular design for source separation
With a closed system, Bigbelly limits access to the trash for unauthorized people and pests. This removes much of the food that pests grow on and instead allows the trash to be preserved until collection should occur. A perfect option now that recycling can be done in the square.
The municipality has developed a unique design in connection with the campaign "An Öland without litter" and now gives visitors the opportunity to sort in the city's central square. Symbols from Avfall Sverige are used to make the sorting options extra clear.
In addition, these smart bins are equipped with a built-in compactor powered by solar cells. This is to compress waste and optimise space. By choosing this sorting station, instead of the traditional 360 litre containers, you can now reach a capacity of an amazing 1710 litres.
