A common question that arises in relation to e-bikes is the cost of electricity per mile. However, providing a simple and universal figure is a challenge. According to Karl Corneliusson, product owner at EWF Eco, it depends on the specific bike and charger used. But let's explore this topic further. 

Charging the popular Crescent Elina battery, found in Sweden's best-selling electric bike, requires about 750 Wh of energy. With an electricity price of just over one krona per kWh, the cost of a full charge is about one krona. With an impressive range of up to 80 km, the cost per mile is only 13 öre.

Sustainable charging for the future of mobility

Karl elaborates by sharing EWF Eco's extensive experience in charging various lithium-ion batteries, including those used in computers, tablets and mobile phones. He highlights the following: 

  • There is a wide range of power and charging current for bicycle batteries on the market. 
  • Chargers are often marketed in terms of ampere hours (Ah), with common values being 2 A, 4 A or 6 A, but also up to 10 A in rare cases. 
  • It is important to note that this charging current applies to the DC part of the charger. The charger usually converts 230 V AC to 24 V or 36 V DC, although other voltages are also possible. 
  • In addition, losses in the charger should be considered, which usually result in heat generation. We estimate that the losses in a bicycle battery charger can amount to 33%.
