Örebro's smart trash cans take the city towards a greener and more efficient future

With only 1-2 emptying per week, compared to the previous 7 times, the city saves money and reduces the burden on operations.

Bye-bye rats and birds: Örebro introduces dense bins in the city centre

The city of Örebro is taking a big step towards a more sustainable city center with smart trash cans. The new bins are an effective way to reduce litter, while keeping unwanted guests away. After a successful test in Våghustorget, the city is now expanding the project to more streets in the city center. Using technology and innovation, the city can take a step closer to a cleaner and more pleasant urban environment for everyone.

Starting from week 14, around 25 of the city's old yellow bins will be replaced with 10 new smart bins. These bins have been designed to prevent rats and birds from rooting through the waste and creating an unclean environment in the city. With these dense bins, it is easier than ever to keep the city's streets and squares clean and tidy. This is an important and positive change that will improve the lives of both residents and visitors to the city.

- Even though we changed from 14 bins to 6 in the test at Våghustorget, the total amount of litter decreased. With these results behind us, we are now testing over a larger area to see how we can take it further," says Jonas Nilsson, street engineer at the Technical and Service Administration.

Already proven to be a triple win

The smart bins in Örebro city have already proven to be a triple win, improving the urban environment, streamlining work and creating a better working environment for cleaning staff. Now the city is looking forward to expanding the project and taking another step towards a cleaner and more sustainable city. But it is not only up to the authorities to make a change, we as residents also have a responsibility to use the smart bins to keep our city looking good. Together, we can create a pleasant environment for ourselves and for future generations.

The city of Örebro is taking a big step towards a more sustainable future with its new smart bins. The new bins compress the waste and use modern technology to notify when it is time to empty them, reducing the need for daily emptying.

Emptying, from 7 to 2 times a week

With only 1-2 emptyings per week, compared to the previous 7 times, the city saves money and reduces the burden on its operations. But it's not just practicality that makes these bins smart - they are also a symbol of the city of Örebro's commitment to creating a more sustainable future.

- It allows us to work much more efficiently," says Jonas Nilsson, street engineer. "We save a lot of working time that can be used to clean up elsewhere. Another effect is that when the rats are absent, we also save the cost of paving that they dig up, and the cost of pest control.

The city's smart litter bins in Örebro's inner city are an exciting innovation that not only contributes to a cleaner urban environment but also provides valuable statistics. The bins collect data showing which bins are most used and when they need to be emptied, making the emptying process more efficient and environmentally friendly.

To optimize the use of the bins, they will be moved around during the test period to see how they work in different locations in the city. This long-term test, extending over a year, gives the city the opportunity to learn more about the technology and develop it further. With these smart bins, the city of Örebro is on its way to a greener and more sustainable future.
